This journal

The majority of this blog is friends-only.

I'm not sure why people want to read more of what I write (as far as locked posts); most of it is stuff that only people who actually know me would care about, and has almost nothing to do with the stuff I make public.

However, if you would like to read the f-locked parts of this journal here's what to do:

1) if I've already friended you, friend me back
2) if I haven't friended you, friend me (if you haven't already) and post a comment here with how we know each other/how you got here (from another community, for example). I will not friend you until you do that step.
3) Once you do step 2, I will look at your journal and friend you back if I feel comfortable with that.

If I unfriend you, it either means that I do not find your journal of sufficient interest to continue receiving it or your posts were triggering me in some way.

I didn't write this but this is how I feel

I'm doing fine, by the way. Thanks to everyone who asked. :)

I'm going to keep this here for now just because there are some things I've written (links, mostly, and a couple of articles) that I want to keep available. But if there's something you want from here grab it because I might change my mind ;)

Stories from the other side

This site is collecting the stories of slaveowners' descendants:

Genealogy has become a passion for many Americans. However, it is our experience that among white descendants of slaveholders, few know of their family’s historical connection to slavery, and in general, those who do are not comfortable researching that connection.

This discomfort is understandable in light of the emotional burden that may come with confronting the truth. The result of avoiding the truth, though, is that it remains buried. Our communities' memories are distorted. Our collective efforts to become truly United States and a healthy society are hobbled by amnesia and denial.

We have found that inviting and listening non-judgmentally to the stories of white descendants of slaveholders creates a "safe space" and allows a depth of sharing that brings important truth to light, helps people connect where there has been disconnection, facilitates healing, and can catalyze fresh thinking and principled action.

Happy new year!

Back from a visit to CA to visit family ... it went pretty well considering we drove. We were gone almost a week, and all the animals seemed to be fine with the amount of food/water we left behind for them.

The website is doing great ... I feel so much more comfortable publishing non-fiction than fiction ... I'm not sure why. But I'm having a lot of fun with it so far.

Hope everyone stays safe tonight and has a great 2011.

Happy whatever you're celebrating ...

Between getting ready to go out of town to my inlaws place for Christmas and a couple of new projects, I haven't had much time for this blog. But I hope all of you are doing well (we are) and have a good holiday.

Best wishes for the new year!
